Grok sucks, but not completely, and another prediction of AI-mageddon

[edit source]

At Nieman Journalism Lab, Bill Adair (journalist) says "If Grok...were a student in one of my writing courses, I would give it a D" and it "can't write worth a lick", and finds "a mush of buzzwords" in his own Grok biography, the verbosity of which would "help someone suffering from a sleep disorder". But he says that Grok "shows that AI is actually pretty good at finding tidbits in the far corners of the internet" and, though "clueless" at good writing, is an example of technology that "can be a tool that helps [humans] research and write better articles". [1]

And at The Tufts Daily, "The Death of Wikipedia" says "The biggest threat to Wikipedia's survival, AI, is likely the online tool, rife with misinformation, that we first assumed Wikipedia would be."

In brief

[edit source]
The death of Wikipedia has been predicted many times from many causes; now AI is seen as the latest.
The asymptotic march of computer hardware to zero value hasn't reached the X-axis yet

  • Subtitle: Minnesota Legislative Reference Library told Washington Post Ilhan Omar's birth date was changed in official records and attempted at her request? not clear on Wikipedia and "that Omar's staff had sought that change". Snopes weighed in on the matter as well, putting the "true" check-mark on their article, and noted in mid-October that "Rep. Omar's congressional staff are working with Wikipedia and the U.S. House to correct her birth year in those sources." New York Post and Fox News echoed the Wikipedia connection to the matter.
  • Don't throw away that old PC yet: In last issue's column, we wrote about an offline Wikipedia reader with an attached LLM for plain English inquiries. Well, here's another, this time with decade-old hardware showing it can be done with just 16 GB of RAM and no GPU. (HowToGeek.com)
